Born in Rochester, MN, I learned the value of hard work and commitment to excellence by watching my mom and dad work hard to start their own business. I learned that a good life is really just the result of a few key ingredients –faith, family, hard work and perseverance, and a whole lot of love. It also helps to have some fun, which there was plenty of growing up. I left Rochester to attend Mankato State University where I graduated cum laude in 1981 with my degree in accounting.
Married for 37 Years, 6 Kids and 4 Grandkids
In 1985, I was fortunate to have married my wife, Sharon. Over the last 37 years, we have raised 6 kids together and now share 4 grandkids. We moved to a hobby farm in Wheatland Township in 1998 where we’ve had countless chickens and goats as well as few pigs and cows. Our kids are now grown adults, and it has been gratifying to see my children finish their education, pursue their careers, and start their own families. Being a husband, dad, and now grandpa continues to be the most rewarding experience of my life.
Thirty-Year Accounting Career
For the last 30 years and I worked as an accountant as both a Certified Management Accountant (CMA) and Certified Government Financial Manager (CGFM). For the last 24 years, I have been an accountant for Scott County, where I have managed funding for transportation projects. While my time with Scott County has been rewarding, I plan on retiring at the end of this year so I can commit my time to serving in the Minnesota Legislature. During my time with Scott County, I had the privilege of serving as the Treasurer, Vice-President, and President of the MN Highway Accountants Association and spent five years on the Scott County Employee Association.
As a father of six kids, it comes as no surprise that I’ve done my fair share of coaching! I was a softball coach for seven years and thoroughly enjoyed coaching kids on not only the game but also teamwork and sportsmanship. In 2007, I started a jail ministry where I preach three services a week to individuals in jail or on work release. It has been both humbling and rewarding to share the Good News with people experiencing difficult life situations. Additionally, I currently serve as the Treasurer of the Wheatland Township Board, and my wife and I have "adopted" a highway in our community. I attend Bethel's Rock Church in Farmington and have served in a variety of roles in the faith community over the years.
I love spending time “Up North” with family, hunting, fishing, and playing golf with my kids when I get the chance.
